The angle between the horizontal and that
taken up by a freely pivoted magnetic needle
(the dip needle) mounted vertically in the
Earth's magnetic field. It is also called the
angle of inclination. The dip needle
parallels the lines of force of the magnetic
field at any point. Thus at the magnetic
north and south poles, the needle dips
vertically and the angle of dip is 90
degrees.
